[lateinisch »der in einem Kreis herumdreht«] der, -s/...'toren, Physik: in der (newtonschen) Mechanik die Idealisierung eines starren Körpers als zwei in einem festen Abstand starr miteinander verbundene Punktmassen (starrer Rotator). - Der Rotator ist das einfachste Modell eines zweiatomigen Moleküls, wenn nur dessen Freiheitsgrade der Rotation betrachtet werden. Bei der quantenmechanischen Behandlung zeigt sich, dass die Rotation des Rotators quantisiert wird, sodass er nur diskrete Energiewerte annehmen kann; diese Eigenwerte bilden das Rotationsspektrum des quantenmechanischen Rotators (räumlicher Rotator).
